Devon Rex Breeder Florida Families Trust

Florida is the one destination where the weather works in this breed's favour. With over 15 years of experience, DragonflyCats continues to breed Devon Rex, and we send kittens to families from Miami and Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville.

Our kittens grow up indoors with the family, the other cats and the dogs, and each leaves spayed or neutered, registered with TICA, vaccinated, microchipped and genetically tested, with a full set of health records and a Royal Canin starter kit.

Devon Rex kittens for the Sunshine State

Florida is some 1,500 miles from us, so the kitten covers the distance, not you. Paperwork and health certificates are handled on our end, and we map out the trip with you, confirming everything at reservation. Shipping is charged separately, and customs or brokerage fees are the buyer's.

Here is the pleasant surprise: a Devon Rex is better suited to Florida than to almost anywhere else we ship. Everywhere else, the thin coat is something to manage. Here, a cat that seeks out warmth and stretches out in a patch of sun is simply in the right place. Condos in Brickell, single-level homes in Naples, gated communities around Sarasota — all of it works for an indoor cat that wants company more than acreage.

Two Florida-specific things do need attention, and neither is difficult. Air conditioning set to 70 degrees is colder than it sounds to a cat with no undercoat, so give it a fleece bed somewhere away from the vents. And a sparsely coated cat can genuinely sunburn: a Devon Rex dozing behind glass in July should have shade available, not just sun. We hear from families all over Florida, including:

  • Miami
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • West Palm Beach
  • Boca Raton
  • Naples
  • Fort Myers
  • Sarasota
  • Tampa
  • St. Petersburg
  • Orlando
  • Jacksonville
  • Tallahassee
  • Gainesville
  • The Villages

Warmth, air conditioning and a very fine coat

The Devon Rex coat is short, wavy and thin, with areas — the ears, the chest, in front of the ears — where it can be sparse enough that skin shows through. That is normal for the breed, and it is why heat suits it. It also means two small adjustments in a Florida home. Keep a warm, soft bed away from the air conditioning vents, because a cat with little insulation feels a chilled room more than you do. And make sure the sunniest window has shade nearby, so a long afternoon nap in direct sun is a choice rather than the only option.

For snowbirds and anyone who travels between two homes, this breed is unusually portable in temperament. A Devon Rex that is attached to its people rather than its furniture generally travels and resettles well, provided it has a familiar carrier, its own blanket and a quiet room at each end. Plenty of fresh water year-round matters more here than anywhere else we ship to.

Bringing your kitten home to Florida

Reservation done; we plan the trip with you. We prepare the health certificates and paperwork, and build the schedule around them.

Shipping is billed separately from the kitten's price, with the balance due two weeks before departure. Health records, registration papers, a Royal Canin starter kit and 30 days of Trupanion coverage come with your kitten. One local suggestion once it's home: if you keep a hurricane kit, add the cat to it — carrier, a few days of food, water, litter and a copy of the health records.

Frequently asked questions

Can Florida families adopt one of your Devon Rex kittens?

Better than most breeds. Its fine coat and love of warmth suit the climate well. As an indoor cat it needs shade near sunny windows, fresh water, and a cozy bed away from air conditioning vents.

Do you place Devon Rex kittens with families in Florida?

Yes. We place kittens throughout Florida. We prepare the paperwork and health certificates and plan transport with you, confirming all details at reservation.

What is involved in bringing a kitten to Florida?

We confirm the schedule with you, prepare the health certificates and paperwork, and set the time.

Can a Devon Rex get sunburned?

A sparsely coated cat can, yes. It's easily avoided: make sure there's shade near the sunniest windows so your cat can choose sun or shade rather than lying in direct light all afternoon.

We're snowbirds. Does a Devon Rex travel well between homes?

You can place a 30% deposit on a kitten that's available, or pay the $500 waiting-list fee for priority choice among upcoming litters, in signup order. Deposits are not refundable and not transferable.
